Even though Flamengo deservedly won the Guanabara Cup, it is impossible to deny that the big surprise of the 2024 Carioca Championship is Nova Iguaçu. The team is having a historic campaign, managing to qualify in second place in the table, in addition to having a superior performance in the draw in the first leg of the semi-final against Vasco. Behind the team that plays offensive football and dominates theoretically superior opponents, is the work of coach Carlos Vitor, who is inspired by the historic Flamengo of 1981.

“Cal” , as he is also known, worked at Nova Iguaçu's under-17 team as an assistant to Carlos Alberto Sotelho, a right-back who was part of the Libertadores and 1981 World Cup champion squad with Flamengo. That was when he was able to learn even more about the style of play he uses today as a coach.

“I was lucky enough to, at the beginning, work as an assistant to Carlos Alberto, Flamengo's right-back in 1981, at under-17. It was an internship. He came from that team, a team that moved generations”, said Carlos, in an interview with the newspaper 'O Globo'.

Coach of the main squad of the Baixada Fluminense team since 2021, the coach shaped his work to based on the concepts he studied from the Flamengo team. Another team that serves as inspiration is the 1982 Brazilian team, which featured red-and-black idols Zico, Júnior and Leandro as highlights. Carlos Vitor uses his references to set up a light attack, with a lot of exchange of passes and movement of the athletes. The result is Carioca's fourth best attack, with 20 goals, ahead of Fluminense, and a game in which they had many clear chances to win against Vasco, but the team wasted many chances.

Nova Iguaçu decides the classification in the Campeonato Carioca against Vasco on Sunday (17), at 4 pm, and has the advantage of a draw. After a soap opera, it was decided that the game will be at Maracanã, right after Flamengo faced Fluminense for one last time in the competition, the day before at 9pm (Brasília time).

Alex Sandro and Plata, debutants in last Sunday's classic, remain in the team after having good performances in the draw against Vasco. Gabigol is now out of the relationship due to fibrosis in the posterior muscle of his right thigh. Flamengo, in a statement, reported that the athlete did not suffer any injury in the region. Check it out:

"The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that the athlete Gabriel Barbosa underwent tests that did not diagnose an injury to the posterior muscle of his right thigh. However, the Technical Committee opted for precaution and did not list him for the duel against Peñarol due to fibrosis in the region. Gabi is handed over to physiotherapists and physical trainers for the series of decisive games of the season."

The attacker Carlinhos should be Flamengo's starter in the classic against Botafogo this Sunday (18), in the 23rd round of the Brazilian Championship. The number 22 must take over the space left by Pedro and Gabigol. Playing against the Rio rival brings back good memories for the player. In this year's Carioca he scored two goals against Botafogo.

At the time, Carlinhos was wearing the Nova Iguaçu number 9 shirt. The match was held in February, at the Engenhão stadium, in the sixth round of the tournament. Botafogo led 2-0, but Carlinhos led his team's reaction by scoring two goals. In the end, the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

The game against Botafogo will be Carlinhos' fourth as a starter with the Rubro-Negro shirt. He was part of Tite's lineup against Palmeiras, Atlético-MG and São Paulo. Against the Minas Gerais club, number 22 scored the second goal of the game.

Carlinhos should have a sequence in the starting team

Without Pedro, Gabigol and Everton Cebolinha, Mengão's number 22 should gain a sequence in Tite's starting team . In addition to the match against Botafogo, he should be selected in the starting eleven against Bolívar, on Thursday (22), in the return game of the round of 16.

As Pedro and Gabigol only return in September , Carlinhos should also play against: Bragantino (25); in the first game of the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil (27, 28 or 29); and Corinthians (01/09).

Striker projects season titles

Signed by Mais Querido after being second top scorer in the Campeonato Carioca, striker Carlinhos projected to win all the titles that Flamengo has to compete for this season. The projection was made during 'Carona com Smigol', a FLATV program.

In the conversation, he said that “this energy of ours, this vibration of ours in each training session and each game, everyone donating to the maximum, so nothing is better than finishing as champions of the Brazilian Championship, we will achieve that, God willing. Let's look for all possible titles.”
