There is a great controversy in Brazilian football involving the use of synthetic pitches by clubs in their stadiums. Some opt for synthetic grass, others for natural grass or even hybrid lawn, which mixes the two. Botafogo is one of those that opted for artificial, but some players at the club understand that it is not ideal.

In an interview with ESPN, midfielder Eduardo, for example, revealed that he prefers to play on natural grass, thus agreeing with the Flamengo and even with Rubro Negro's idol, Zico. However, the player did not fail to praise Nilton Santos' pitch.

“Botafogo's synthetic is very good. Very much so. It's very different from the synthetic pitch of Palmeiras and Athletico - PR, I think several players have already said that. But I still prefer natural grass”, says Eduardo in an interview with the ESPN program.

On another occasion, Flamengo had already taken a position against synthetic grass. At a press conference, Marcos Braz and Bruno Spindel explained that the club understands that football on a synthetic field is another sport. In other words, benefiting the home team.

“There are already 3 or 4 teams playing in synthetic. Our League will be the most beautiful it has, playing with 10 or 12 synthetic pitches. It's another sport. If there is no brake on this, that will be it soon. The only solution to play 90 games at Maracanã is synthetic grass, which is absurd”, declared Braz.

Mais Querido's idol, Zico, has also shown his position against the use of synthetic grass in stadiums from Brazil. On the Resenha do Galinho program, he was quite irritated by the growth of synthetic pitches in professional football.

“I can't stand synthetic grass. Synthetic grass is what you can do to save money, rain problems, take more classes, play games, football school, it's even valid. Now for the official competition… You spend a little more and value the competition. Then the guys start to hit, saying there’s no difference, they just never went inside to feel it”, said Zico.

After more than a decade with Nike, the Flamengo striker signed a six-year agreement with Mizuno. According to journalist Carolina Alberti, from UOL, Gabigol is the first Brazilian athlete to form a partnership with the company.

Mizuno's general manager, Rogério Barenco, explained the reasons behind choosing Gabigol to represent the brand, highlighting the visibility and striking personality of the number 99, both on and off the field. The player himself announced the new sponsorship on his Instagram profile.

“We found in Gabriel this issue of determination, of the search for excellence. We understand that he is an athlete who brings these values. Our slogan within Mizuno is reach beyond, and Gabriel certainly brings us this value”, said the manager.

“In addition to having this great strength within from the field, he also has a lot of strength off the field. […] Gabriel is a very authentic guy, he has his own style, and his influence transcends football. People are seeing him on his social media, how he dresses, how he behaves. We will also be working on him using Mizuno on a daily basis”, continued Rogério.

Gabigol gave tips about the new agreement with Mizuno

Before the official announcement, Gabigol had already raised speculation by posting enigmatic content on social media, with some publications making reference to Japan. These posts fueled rumors of a possible agreement with an Asian brand.

Barenco also commented on the great repercussion of the publications by the red-and-black idol, highlighting the positive impact on the Japanese brand.

“That’s exactly the noise we want to have. And I think this is one of the things that most led us to close this contract with him. The people, the fans, the football community, journalists, everyone watching what Gabriel is doing. He draws the spotlight to him. And we are happy with the repercussion”, said the brand representative.

Flamengo's historic score in the 2019 Brasileirão, which was 90 points, can no longer be matched by the leader of the 2024 edition. Botafogo, with 53 points in 26 games, will only be able to reach 89 points if they win all 12 remaining games. In this way, Jorge Jesus' Rubro-Negro maintains the best campaign in the history of the Brazilian Championship since the tournament is played by 20 teams.

Currently, Flamengo occupies fourth place in the championship, with 45 points in 25 matches. In the last five rounds, the team won just one, in addition to having recorded two draws and two defeats. He also came up short in the first match of the Libertadores quarter-finals, at Maracanã, against Peñarol. Mengão is still in the semi-finals of the Copa do Brasil, where they will face Corinthians.

Botafogo leads the competition and is in the quarter-finals of the Libertadores, having drawn goalless in the first match against São Paulo, in Engineering. In the Copa do Brasil, they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Bahia, who, in turn, were eliminated by Flamengo in the quarterfinals.

This Sunday (22), Rubro-Negro faces Grêmio, while Alvinegro plays this Saturday (21) against Fluminense. Both games are scheduled for 6:30 pm, for the 27th round of the Brasileirão. Coach Tite will use an alternative lineup, as the starters stayed in Rio de Janeiro in preparation for the return game of the Libertadores.
