Atlético-MG took the lead in the round of 16 clash by beating Flamengo 1-0 this Thursday (1), at Maracanã , in front of a crowd of 64,681 fans. The only goal of the match was scored by Cuello, 20 minutes into the second half , after an error in the ball exit by the red-black defense.
Flamengo had more possession and pushed forward for much of the match, but they were unable to break through the Minas Gerais team's defensive block. Despite creating good opportunities , they were met with crucial saves from Everson, the post, and shots blocked by the defense.
The first half was balanced. Flamengo tried to control the game and control possession, while Atlético relied on quick counterattacks. Hulk had a clear chance in the opening minutes , but wasted it. The Red-Blacks responded with Pedro, and in the best chance of the first half, Evertton Araújo hit the crossbar with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box.
The Maracanã saw the debuts of Emerson Royal and Samuel Lino in a Flamengo jersey. Lino, in fact, starred in one of the key plays of the second half, dribbling past Lyanco and forcing Everson to make a great save . The match, valid for the 26th round, will not be broadcast on open TV ; SporTV will show it on subscription TV and Premiere on pay-per-view.
Coach Filipe Luís will be without Erick Pulgar, who is still recovering from surgery on his right foot. Additionally, four players are on suspension: Léo Pereira, Alex Sandro, Allan, and Arrascaeta. If any of them receive a yellow card, they will miss the 27th round against Bahia.
