The election in Flamengo continues in full swing. This Thursday (15), Eduardo Bandeira de Mello, former President of the club, declared his support for the candidacy of Maurício Gomes de Mattos (MGM) in the election on December 9th in Gávea. MGM was deputy general in Bandeira's second term in red-black from 2016 to 2018. The information is from the portal 'Coluna do Fla'.

Bandeira de Mello considered running for election, but was recommended by supporters not to do so due to the fire process at Ninho do Urubu on February 8, 2019. The federal deputy is a defendant in the process and people close to Bandeira believe that legal action could be used against the politician in the election to tarnish his image.

With the support, Bandeira de Mello should nominate the vice-general on the MGM ticket, the preferred one being Wellington Silva, former vice-president of Communications. The information is from ‘Mundo Rubro-Negro’. The former President's announcement comes on the same day that a survey by Atlas Intel was released where the deputy of the Network appears as the favorite of Flamengo fans in general, including non-members, to assume the presidency of the Club.

Due to Bandeira's delay in taking a position, he took several of his allies, such as former -vice-presidents Flávio Willeman, Alexandre Póvoa, Antônio Tabet and Ricardo Lomba to declare support for Luiz Eduardo Baptista, Bap, as they believe he is the only one capable of defeating the current candidate, Rodrigo Dunshee.

Supporting Bap was immediately discarded by Bandeira, as he believes that the current president of the Board of Directors is one of the main responsible for the political persecution that led to two attempts to expel the former President from the club's membership and a proposition that would prevent the deputy to run in any Flamengo election.

Mauricio Gomes de Mattos now counts part of the SoFla group, the main support group for Bandeira de Mello, among his supporters. Other opposition groups in the last election had already declared their vote for MGM, such as Grap (Grupo Raça Amor e Paixão), by Marco Aurélio Assef, Frente Flamengo Maior, by Walter Monteiro, and Flamengo Sem Fronteiras, by Ricardo Hinrichsen (who left the group to support Bap).

One of Flamengo's presidential candidates, Luiz Eduardo Baptista, better known as BAP, announced that the club's possible new stadium should cost approximately R$2.5 billion. The project, which aims to build an arena in the Gasometer region, in the center of Rio de Janeiro, foresees a capacity for 70 thousand fans. The statement was given in an exclusive interview with Lance!, as part of a series with all the candidates for the red-black election, scheduled for December this year.

< b>COST AND LEGAL CHALLENGES

BAP, when estimating the value of R$ 2.5 billion for the construction, highlighted that the club will face legal challenges regarding the acquisition of the land, which belonged to a fund administered by Caixa Econômica Federal and was expropriated by Rio City Hall. He believes that there will be a legal imbroglio over the area, but he was confident in overcoming these obstacles.

“I estimate that a stadium of 70 thousand seats will cost around R$2.5 billion. I am absolutely sure that there will be a legal battle, because, in Brazil, this ends up being politically influenced as well. We hope that, with the team we have, we can overcome these challenges and find a solution that benefits all parties involved — Caixa, the Caixa fund, the City Hall, the State government, the fans and Flamengo”, stated the candidate .

OPPOSITION TO THE PURCHASE OF THE PORTUGUESE CLUB

Another point addressed by Luiz Eduardo Baptista was his opposition to the purchase of Leixões, a second division club in Portugal. The CRF is in negotiations to acquire the Portuguese team with the aim of strengthening the club's internationalization, but BAP was vehemently against the idea.

“Flamengo gains absolutely nothing from this. It's a waste of time and energy, a terrible idea for the moment the club is going through. If I am elected, at whatever stage this project is at, it will be immediately cancelled”, he declared.

The election to choose the club's new president will take place in December and will define who will lead Flamengo for the next three years. BAP is one of the strong names in the electoral race and seeks to implement a modernization project, focusing on the club's infrastructure and finances.
