Jorge Sampaoli, former Flamengo coach , gave an interview to "ge" and revealed curious details about his childhood, including an episode related to his love for football and an unusual connection with one of the Mais Querido's biggest rivals. The coach, who was in charge of the red-black team between 2022 and 2023, remembered when, still very young, he wore the Vasco shirt, a team with which Flamengo has a historic rivalry in Rio de Janeiro.
CHILDHOOD AND LOVE FOR VASCO'S SHIRT
During the conversation, Sampaoli spoke about the origin of this episode, explaining that the purchase of the Vasco shirt was not related to any kind of affection for the Rio de Janeiro team, but rather to his admiration for the uniform's design. "I was very, very young. I went to Foz do Iguaçu, on the border with Paraguay. I saw this shirt and bought it because I really liked it," said the coach. "I liked the shirt, I didn't know the team very well. When they said that Romário played there, I said: 'I want that shirt'."
PASSAGE AT FLAMENGO AND VOLUNTARY DEPARTURE
Despite his short time at Flamengo , Sampaoli left his mark by taking over the team at a time of transition. During his time at the club, the coach had a complex relationship with the board, but revealed that it was he himself who requested to leave the club, rather than being fired. "I asked to leave, but president Landim kept me on," said the Argentine, highlighting that the decision was made after some personal reflection.
In addition to Flamengo, Jorge Sampaoli had notable stints at two other major Brazilian football teams: Santos and Atlético-MG. At Santos, he took over in 2019 and gained recognition for his work with the São Paulo team. At Atlético-MG, his arrival in 2020 marked a new stage in the coach's career, with the winning of the Campeonato Mineiro and a good campaign in the Brasileiro.
Currently free on the market, Sampaoli has been frequently speculated to join other teams in Brazilian football. Recently, his name was mentioned for the command of Botafogo, but the black and white club opted to hire Renato Paiva, former coach of Bahia. Now, the Argentine coach awaits a new opportunity to return to command a team in Brazil.
