The year began with sad news for the Rubro-Negra Nation. The legend Denir, a masseur who had served Flamengo since 1981, passed away due to brain cancer. The idol's wake took place in Gávea, the club's headquarters. It turns out that the absence of players at the ceremony surprised and angered the fans.
Denir was greatly honored by athletes on social media. However, the same did not happen at his wake. The legend's body remained in Gávea throughout the morning of this Tuesday (2), and was later buried in the Jardim da Saudade cemetery, in Mesquita.
To everyone's surprise, the only active player who Attending the red-black griô's wake was Marcelo Lomba. The goalkeeper was revealed by Flamengo in 2006 and now plays for Palmeiras. Adílio and Athirson were the former players who attended the ceremony.
Not even Rodolfo Landim, president of Flamengo, was present. Márcio Tannure (head of DM), Vitor Zanelli (VP of base), Reinaldo Belotti (CEO of Fla), Bruno Spindel (executive director of football), Marcos Braz (VP of football) and Gabriel Skinner (supervisor) were the directors who paid their respects to Denir in Gávea.
The fans did not hide their irritation with the absence of players and idols at the red-black legend's wake. For many fans, the fact that the athletes are on vacation, most of them far from Rio, does not serve as an excuse. Red-blacks interpreted this attitude as a lack of respect towards Denir and showed deep disappointment.
Flamengo fans react disappointed with the squad
“Nego defends the player tooth and nail, there was no a son of a bitch from Flamengo's current squad who went to Mr Denir's wake. That's because he was very important to the club. Lomba, who left Flamengo more than two hundred years ago, was the only active player who went there”
“The club’s players said he was important, some considered him family, but they didn’t take the time to your vacation to attend Seu Denir's wake, a shame”
“About Denir's wake in Gávea, there is the sadness of the loss and the realization of the hypocrisy of those who, in front of the FlaTV camera, kissed the hand of the old man upon arrival in the locker room... so much “consideration” was not worth the illustrious presence of these “idols” in the final goodbye”
“2024 is already shit. It could end. No players attended Denir's wake is a reflection of the lack of respect these players have for the club's history. And worse, forgetting Flamengo, they didn't go to say goodbye to a beloved employee, who they said they liked so much" and bad behavior, honestly”
“What sluts these Flamengo players are. The president and other leaders, too. They did not attend the wake or the funeral of Mr. Denir, who for 42 years was race, sweat and passion for Flamengo”
“No player from the current squad went to his Denir’s wake. None. If it were for a party, everyone would be there. Even Landim himself didn't go. They are completely disconnected from reality and what Flamengo is”
The Philadelphia 76ers center was at a shopping mall in Cabo Frio, in the Lakes Region of Rio de Janeiro, and made purchases of Mengão products.

Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid, MVP of the 2022/23 NBA season, once again demonstrated his affection for Flamengo . Last Thursday (21), the Cameroonian player was spotted in an official club store, in Cabo Frio (RJ) , where he made a point of purchasing several red-black products.
Although unusual, Embiid's presence in the Lakes Region has a reason. Married to Brazilian model Anne de Paula, the athlete often visits the city, where his father-in-law lives, during the holidays. This time, he took the opportunity to explore the "Nação Rubro-Negra" store and expand his Flamengo memorabilia collection.
The star's arrival took everyone by surprise and caused great excitement among the employees. Salesman Kauan said he was so nervous when he met the player that he forgot to remove the alarm from a piece of furniture, creating an unusual moment: " His father-in-law even joked with me afterward. It was an unforgettable experience ," he revealed.
Embiid didn't hold back. He brought jerseys for himself, his wife, his father-in-law, and his son , as well as accessories like shorts and thermoses. The visit even helped meet the store's sales goals. The center also obliged some fans and store owners by agreeing to take photos with them.
Embiid's connection with Flamengo isn't new. In 2023, during an interview with the NBA Freestyle program, he revealed that he started supporting Flamengo because of his wife's family: " Actually, I'm a Flamengo fan because my girlfriend's father is a fan . Since we started dating, I've been following the team," he said.
In January 2024, when Flamengo held a preseason training camp in Philadelphia, Embiid met Léo Pereira and Matheus Gonçalves . The defender even posted a photo with the star: " Nice to meet you, brother ." Thus, the relationship between Joel Embiid and Flamengo continues to grow, uniting basketball and soccer in a connection that already transcends borders.
