Venê Casagrande detonated Flamengo this Thursday (05) during a program on SBT Rio. The journalist compared the "shameful" performance of the red-black team with that of their classic rival Fluminense, who managed to qualify on Wednesday night on Friday (04) for the final of the Copa Libertadores da América and, thus, in his opinion, assumes a leading role in Rio de Janeiro football.
After defeating Internacional in a beautiful 2-1 comeback, Fluminense is the first finalist of the 2023 Libertadores. The result caused a lot of movement on social media and raised the frustration of Flamengo fans, as the team has much more financial and structural capacity to be successful than the neighboring club, which was not the case this season.
"In relation to expectations and reality, it is the worst season in Flamengo's history. A lot was expected and Flamengo won nothing. So I think Flamengo needs to improve a lot and can catch Fluminense as example", began the commentator, pointing out how the red-and-black could emerge victorious in a series of tournaments and have lost them all so far.
Having won the Copa do Brasil and Libertadores last season, the team had chances in eight different competitions this campaign. Of the eight, Flamengo lost seven. These were: the Recopa Sul-americana, the Supercopa, the Guanabara Cup, the Campeonato Carioca, the Club World Cup, the Libertadores and the Copa do Brasil. Rubro-Negro only has the Brasileirão left.
Back at Fluminense, Casagrande pointed out: "[The team] is an example of success in Rio de Janeiro football and in fact, today, it is the protagonist. Flamengo is not is the protagonist, although it has the financial resources and structure to be the protagonist. And it was in the recent past, but this year, in 2023, Flamengo is a disgrace."
Flamengo's only chance of redemption, as has already been said, is the Brasileirão. The team is in fifth place at the moment, accumulating 43 points. Their distance to second place is just two points (Bragantino - 45 points), but to first place it is 9 points (Botafogo - 52 points).

The Under-17 Boys from the Nest return to the field this Thursday (19), at 3pm, to face Fluminense in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the Brazilian Under-17 Championship. The match will be played in Gávea and will be broadcast live on SporTV.
Led by coach Eduardo Zuma, the red-black team arrives at the clash after winning four victories in the last five games. In the final round of the first phase, Mengão beat Corinthians 5-0, securing third place in group A, with 15 points. There were five wins in nine games and 19 goals scored, the second best attack in the group.
Midfielder Lucas Vieira highlighted the relevance of the result in the first match of the quarterfinals. "Important game. I think it's always good to come away with a victory in the first game, especially at home. And try to make history by winning the Brazilian Under-17 Championship", said Vieira about the decisive classic.
In 2024, Flamengo and Fluminense faced each other only once. The duel took place in the first phase of the Copa Rio, when Mengão beat their rival 3-0 in Xerém.
